Old Comics – How to Care for Them
If you have a collection of old comics, then they might be pretty valuable. Even if you’re just still planning the acquisition of an old comic book, it would definitely help to have a bit of knowledge on how to take care of old comics once you have them. Remember that a comic book’s value depends on its condition. Here are a few tips:
1) Wash your hands – your hands have oils that could damage comic books when you handle them. Before reading or handling the comics, you should wash your hands carefully and dry them thoroughly. This will make sure that your comics aren’t damaged.
2) Use individual bags – in order to store your comics properly, you would need to store them in individual waterproof bags with hard backings. The most ideal type of bag would be Mylar sleeves, but ordinary plastic will do for daily use.
Backing is essential to protect the structural integrity of each comic book. By using individual bags, you will not only be able to protect your collection, but also make it easier for you to sort through your books.
3) Handle the books properly – the spine should show as little wear as possible. Some people suggest that you should handle a comic book on the open leaf end. By making sure that the spine remains intact, your old comics end up with much more value.
4) Boxes – placing your collection in boxes protects them from sunlight (which would cause the early degradation of the paper) and other environmental conditions which could prove detrimental to their preservation. Boxes are also essential in storing your books in a n upright position- much more preferable to stacking them.
5) Moisture is bad – make sure that you keep your collection away from any form of moisture. Store them in a cool, dry place. Placing your comic books in a place that’s too warm during the day could cause dew to condense inside the plastic sleeves and wreak havoc on your collection.
Caring for your comic book collection is relatively easy, once you know the steps to take. Just remember to remain vigilant and passionate about collecting old comics.
