X Men Comic Books – Behind the Adventure

I bet you didn’t know this, but X men comic books aren’t just about superheroes fighting villains. Although the series started out as your typical superhero comic, it has constantly evolved to reflect social issues that have prevailed throughout American and World History.

One of the main issues tackled by the X men comic books is racism. Initially, the team was composed of your typical WASP superheroes, but the diversity grew as the comic evolved its philosophy.

Today, the depiction of the mutants’ struggle for acceptance and equality in the society is seen as a reflection on the racially-prejudiced past.

Magneto, for example, is portrayed as a concentration camp survivor. Mainly fuelled by the desire to never again experience the horrors wrought by a prejudiced society, he does everything in his power to gain dominance for mutants.

The similarities between treatment of mutants in the comic book and the treatment of Jewish people in Nazi Germany are quite evident: concentration camps, branding, and government experimentation.

The clashes between Professor X and Magneto are seen as a reflection of the internal struggles of the civil rights movement of the past, with Professor Xavier portraying the part of Martin Luther King, Jr. and with Magneto portraying the more radical Malcolm X.

Another interesting fact to note is that today, the X men comic books are seen as books on every type of prejudice present in society today.

This is mainly because despite their deeds, the X men are hated and feared simply because they are mutants. While other superheroes are loved and looked up to, the X men struggle to be accepted by people around them.

Today, people who are different from what society terms as “normal” suffer prejudice and try to establish their basic rights, just like mutants portrayed in the X men comic books.

People who are part of racial minorities, who are of a different sexual orientation, who embrace different religions and philosophies can relate to much of the X men’s battle for the world’s embrace.

The X men comic books do so much more than entertain people: they open up minds to tolerance and understanding –concepts that are essential to a global community.
